Super Easy Fathers Day Platter

Blokes board, perfect for fathers day

Ok Peeps, so it’s Fathers Day this Sunday, which as a kid meant socks and undies for dad courtesy of my mum, and breakfast in bed made by us kids. But as we get older, things change and all of a sudden Fathers Day is more like husbands day (since my dad is an ocean away).

This year I got my 2-year-old son to take the reins and choose the gifts, which I have to say was bloody awesome! I asked him what he wanted to get daddy for a present and he said Dinosaur slippers, so creative at such a young age. My husband is ridiculously hard to shop for, so it literally saved me a day of wasted searching. The dinosaur slippers look more like giant bear feet, but my son thought they were ‘simply awesome’ so mission success.

Now for my contribution. Well it just so happens to be my birthday this Saturday, and I already know that my husband and my son are making me pancakes for breakfast, so rather than do breakfast in bed for Fathers Day (because I might be hungover) this year I am doing a real blokes board, to be enjoyed in the afternoon. No frills, no fruit, no fancy garnishes just a couple of delicious ingredients to enjoy with beer. I am all for a decadent cheese board, but everyone does them so I feel a little like they are loosing their wowser status. So I’m going slightly different with simplicity and doing a stripped back blokes board that packs a lot in flavour.

The star ingredient provolone cheese served HOT! That’s right gooey deliciousness that you can dip your bread in. Is a full flavoured Italian cheese, similar to a semi hard mozzarella. Paired with spicy cacciatori sausage, crusty bread and Sicilian olives. Oh yeah and BEER! So the key element to this board is the ingredients need to shine, there is no honey or quince or dip to mask flavours. My advice would be to shop at your local deli if not for everything then at least for the provolone cheese and the Cacciatori sausage and make sure the sausage is firm not soft, when you slice through it you want it to sound like you are sawing something in half that's how hard you want it (don’t worry it will eat wonderfully). The Sicilian olives and the crusty bread can be from the supermarket but choose a rustic baguette over a french stick you need the bread to be heavy enough to pick up the cheese when you dip it in.

Simple! and Tasty!
